What is Vector database?

Vector databases store embeddings and answer "what is most similar to this?" queries quickly, even across millions of entries, using approximate nearest-neighbor indexes. Examples include pgvector (Postgres extension), Pinecone, Weaviate, and Qdrant. They are the retrieval half of every RAG system.
